Here, Lynne’s feelings about money were tied up in the pain she felt after losing her family members. She felt guilty for profiting over their tragic death, and that lingering guilt led her to later also reject the money she earned.

When we pay attention to media coverage of the antics of a few wealthy celebrities, the belief that “rich people are bad” is reinforced. Seeing the children and grandchildren of billionaires squander their money and apparently their lives on self-indulgent excess can give the rest of us a sense of superiority about our own modest circumstances. It can help justify our resentment of the mega-rich and reassure ourselves that we are better off not having wealth. Of course, what we don’t see are the stories of children and grandchildren of the wealthy who live full, meaningful, fulfilling lives. It’s true that these stories are not publicized as often, but it’s also true that we don’t look for them. Why? Because they contradict the script “Wealth ruins relationships and people.” The benefit of this belief is that it helps us feel content with what we have. The down side is that it is a distorted conclusion that feeds our ego and our sense of moral superiority, and limits our ability to acquire and enjoy wealth.
